Guide to the Page Taxonomy Labeling Tool
This labeling tool is designed to help you categorize and tag individual web pages across the SUpal and Search ecosystem.
Why Fill Out This Form?
Properly tagging web pages ensures our digital ecosystem remains organized, intelligent, and user-centric. The data collected from this tool directly drives several critical functions on our websites:
- Optimized Search Results: Precise indexing ensures internal and external search engines surface the most accurate page results for users.
- Advanced AI Integration: Providing structured metadata helps AI tools and language models comprehend and process site content more effectively.
- User Personalization: Tagging pages allows websites to dynamically tailor content delivery, layouts, and recommendations based on individual user needs.
How to Complete the Form
You access the form by clicking the Categories button on the Page Data tab on the properties pane on the right side of the Canvas editor.
Once opened, the form is split into two primary areas: Core Requirements (mandatory tags) and Optional & Functional elements (highly recommended for optimization).
Core Requirements
These sections represent the minimum baseline required to successfully classify a page.
Audiences - Multiple selections are allowed
- The Question It Answers: "Who is this content for?" This tag applies broadly across all content types.
- Instructions: Select the checkboxes for all visitor groups who would find this page relevant.
For example, if a page benefits both Current Students and Parents and Families, select both.
Category - Only one selection allowed
- The Question It Answers: "What type of content is this?" This applies directly to standard pages and institutional programs.
- Instructions: Choose the single radio button that best encompasses the main theme of the page, such as Academics, Research and Innovation, or Administrative Services.
Optional & Functional
Filling out these fields adds rich detail that significantly boosts search accuracy and personalization capabilities.
Topics / Subjects - Multiple selections are allowed
- The Question It Answers: "What is the subject of the content?" This is especially useful for news articles, profile pages, career tracks, and programs.
- Instructions: Check the box for any academic discipline or specific subject matter highlighted on the page (e.g., Business and Management, Engineering, Languages).
Content Purpose - Only one selection allowed
- The Question It Answers: "Why does this content exist? What is its primary function?"
- Instructions: Pick the radio button that matches the page's core goal. Helpful sub-descriptions are listed on the form, such as Inform (provides factual data/policies), Promote (markets programs/services), or Support (helps users complete a task).
Service Category - Only one selection allowed
- The Question It Answers: "What type of university service or offering does this relate to?"
- Instructions: Identify the functional university area associated with the page, such as Student Services, Research & Innovation, or Campus Resources.
Content Format - Only one selection allowed
- The Question It Answers: "How is this information structured and presented?"
- Instructions: Select the radio button that mirrors how the information is structurally organized, like a Directory/Profile, a Process/Procedure workflow, or a Narrative/Story.
User Journey Stage - Only one selection allowed
- The Question It Answers: "When in their relationship with Syracuse do users need this?"
- Instructions: Select the specific phase of the user lifecycle this page addresses, ranging from early Discovery and Application to active status (Active Engagement) or beyond (Alumni/Ongoing).
Submitting Your Selections
Pro-Tip: Pay close attention to single-select options vs. multi-select options. Clicking a new radio button in a single-select field will automatically deselect your previous choice.
- Review Your Work: Verify that the checked criteria align tightly with the actual purpose of the live webpage.
- Resetting the Form: If you make an error or need to clear your choices to start fresh, click the Reset Fields button at the bottom left.
- Saving Your Progress: Once everything is correct, click the Save Page Taxonomy button. You do not need to republish the page when adding or changing your categories. The save button automatically save the data to the live website.
